The Jim Crow Era The Jim Crow Era in United States history began towards the end of the Reconstruction Period and lasted until 1965 with the passage of the Voting Rights Act. The Jim Crow Era was more than a body of legislative acts on the federal, state and local levels that barred African-Americans from being full American citizens. It was also a way of life that allowed de jure racial segregation to exist in the South and de facto segregation to thrive in the North. Origin of the Term "Jim Crow" In 1832,  Thomas D. Rice, a white actor, performed in blackface to a routine known as â€Å"Jump Jim Crow.†Ã‚   By the end of the 19th Century, as southern states passed legislation that segregated African-Americans, the term Jim Crow was used to define these laws In 1904, the phrase Jim Crow Law was appearing in American newspapers. Establishment of a Jim Crow Society In 1865, African-Americans were emancipated from enslavement with the thirteenth amendment. By 1870, the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments are also passed, granting citizenship to African-Americans and allowing African-American the right to vote. By the end of the Reconstruction period, African-Americans were losing federal support in the South. As a result, white legislators on state and local levels passed a series of laws that separated African-Americans and whites in public facilities such as schools, parks, cemeteries, theaters, and restaurants. In addition to barring African-Americans and whites from being in integrated public areas, laws were established prohibiting African-American men from participating in the election process. By enacting poll taxes, literacy tests and grandfather clauses, state and local governments were able to exclude African-American from voting.   The Jim Crow Era was not just laws passed to separate blacks from whites. It was also a way of life. Her refusal led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted over a year and began the modern Civil Rights Movement. By 1960s, college students were working with organizations such as CORE and SNCC, traveling to the South to spearhead voter registration drives.  Men such as Martin Luther King Jr. were speaking not only throughout the United State but the world, about the horrors of segregation. It is in this country again where people talk about golden beaches, ever green vegetation, mountains and unforgettable shopping malls. All these can only be found in Malaysia; in general this country is a fascinating place to be. According to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Malaysia, before 1970 tourism was just an idle, it was not regarded as an important economic activity. It all then started in the 70s when the old Tourism Department of 1959 was developed or redefined to Tourism Development Corporation (TDC). It was officially formed in 1972 under the Ministry of Trade Industry (MITI) and was given a responsibility of acting as an authority development but with very low precedence therefore tourism sector did not really develop in Malaysia comparing it with other countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. It was during this same year when Malaysian Airlines was formed too, this took the countrys economy by surprise a combination of MA and TDC led to the world tourism map. Tourism at the Festival: The calendar of Malaysia is made up of a number of festivals. Hari Raya Puasa is a Muslim feast to celebrate the ending of the holy month of Ramadan. The Festival of San Pedro occurs in mid summer on June 25th. This festival is a celebration of fishing and the great role fishing has place in Malaysian culture. The fishing boats are decorated in brilliant colors and then blessed and a prayer said for a better year of fishing in the year to come. In August and September, Malaysians celebrate the Chinese Mooncake Festival, commemorating the defeat of the Mongols in the fourteenth century. A Helping Hand Ramon Sampedro born January 5th 1943 in North Spain fought for his right to kill himself. At age 25 Ramon unknowingly dove into the shallows of the Atlantic Ocean and became a quadriplegic. Thats where this story begins. The Sea Inside follows Ramon in his few decades long battle with with Spanish courts to legally have someone help him kill himself. In the opening scene of the movie, Roman played by Javier Bardem, is listening to Gene ,his caregiver, lead him into meditation, having him imagine his favorite place, the ocean is pictured on the screen, she tells him to, â€Å"allow your whole body to relax†.A woman is introduced Julia, a lawyer in support of Ramon. Her first encounter with Ramon is moving, â€Å"I want to die because, I feel that a life in this condition, has no dignity. † Ramon admits, along with the fact that some other quadriplegics do not agree with him but begs that, â€Å"I’m not trying to judge anyone. Who am I to judge thos e who choose life, so why judge me or anyone who wants to help me die. † The next line struck me, and will always stick with me. He reminds us that,â€Å"Death has always been with us and always will.It catches up to all of us. Everyone. † Many more moving lines are proclaimed in the movie and help picture the debates cruelty in the viewers mind. Julia explores Ramons life, in search of support to present to the courts. She finds out how Ramon accidentally thrust this lonesome life onto himself. A new woman is introduced, Rosa, a hardworking mother of two who sees a story about Ramon on T. V. seeks him out to try and give him hope about life. Their relationship blooms and Ramon has found a friend.Julia too begins to show interest in Ramon. Julia, while living in the Sampedro house fell one day, that is when the audience finds out she has CADISIL (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy, a hereditary stroke syndrome ). W hile in the hospital Ramon and Julia decide to write a book of his poetry and feelings entitled; Letters from Hell. Ramon reluctantly goes to the court hearing where his lawyer mentions, â€Å".. people who attempt suicide and fail are never subsequently prosecuted.However, when the help of another person is needed to die with dignity, the government intervenes and tramples a mans right to decide for himself. † The courts eventually deny his claim. The story continues with Julia leaving Ramon after publishing his book and a hesitant Rosa offers her help in his suicide. Ramon divided the tasks leading to his suicide into quaint actions, for example, picking up the potassium cyanide from the drugstore, mixing the substance in a glass of water, and placing a the glass next to him in bed with a straw.These actions in themselves are not wrong, all Ramon had to do was willingly drink the fatal mixture to peacefully end his life, which he did, on camera, to prove no one forced him t o do it. In 1998 at age 56 Ramon committed suicide. Weeks after his death in real life, a woman named Ramona Maneiro was arrested and charged, but let go just two days later. Our text,Medical Ethics: Accounts of Ground-Breaking Cases, explains, â€Å"Killing is not always wrong†, based on the metaphysics: that God exists, the scriptures do not specifically say unjustified killing is wrong. This movie presents several justifiable reasons.Ramon says, â€Å"It [death] catches up to all of us†, and our book reads, â€Å"dying for each of us is His Will†. Another scene in the movie shows Julia’s increasing interest in taking her own life, I believe this did not happen in real life but instead was added to show the possibility of others following Sampedro in his endeavor showing the slippery slope the book explains about. However, Julia ended up changing her mind. This bring up yet another idea to think about, if suicide is allowed and someone decided to go thr ough with it, what if one more week could have changed their mind?This is yet another argument that is mirrored in the book. The â€Å"Mistakes and Abuses† section of Chapter 3: Physician-Assisted Dying talked about Ana Pou and her decision to peacefully kill her patients in New Orleans. Maybe if she had waited one more day, relief would have come. Killing versus letting die, my final argument. Chapter 3 asks us if the patient is allowed to die, they are killed by their disease but if someone helps kill them, â€Å"isn’t that human agent the cause of death? †.In the movie, Ramon tried making himself the sole â€Å"cause† by drinking, willfully, the lethal concoction put in front of him. Ramon, a quadriplegic, had no way to kill himself besides maybe drowning in a tub, but even then someone had to put him there. The number 5 reason people commit suicide is terminal illness. Chapter 1 of the book provides these staggering statistics, â€Å"one in 50 attemp ts succeeded†. No matter how is it done, it will always still happen, I believe letting a person die on their own terms is more just than making them suffer till death.

This is a fun, non-toxic project for kids of all ages. All you need is ice, salt, and food coloring. Materials You can use any type of salt for this project. Coarse salt, such as rock salt or sea salt, works great. Table salt is fine. Also, you could use other types of salt besides sodium chloride (NaCl). For example, Epsom salts are a good choice. You dont have to color the project, but its a lot of fun to use food coloring, water colors, or any water-based paint. You can use liquids or powders, whichever you have handy. Materials watersaltfood coloring (or watercolors or tempera paints) What To Do Make ice. You can use ice cubes for this project, but its nice to have larger pieces of ice for your experiment. Freeze water in shallow plastic containers such as disposable storage containers for sandwiches or leftovers. Only fill the containers part way to make relatively thin pieces of ice. The salt can melt holes all the way through thin pieces, making interesting ice tunnels.Keep the ice in the freezer until you are ready to experiment, then remove the blocks of ice and place them on a cookie sheet or in a shallow pan. If the ice doesnt want to come out, ts easy to remove ice from containers by running warm water around the bottom of the dish. Place the pieces of ice in a large pan or a cookie sheet. The ice will melt, so this keeps the project contained.Sprinkle salt onto the ice or make little salt piles on top of the pieces. Experiment!Dot the surface with coloring. The coloring doesnt color the frozen ice, but it follows the melting pattern. Youll be able to see channels, h oles, and tunnels in the ice, plus it looks pretty.You can add more salt and coloring, or not. Explore however you like. Clean Up This is a messy project. You can perform it outdoors or in a kitchen or bathroom. The coloring will stain hands, clothes, and surfaces. You can remove coloring from counters using a cleaner with bleach. How It Works Very young kids will like to explore and may not care too much about the science, but you can discuss erosion and the shapes formed by running water. The salt lowers the freezing point of water through a process called freezing point depression. The ice starts to melt, making liquid water. Salt dissolves in the water, adding ions that increase the temperature at which the water could re-freeze. As the ice melts, energy is drawn from the water, making it colder. Salt is used in ice cream makers for this reason. It makes the ice cream cold enough to freeze. Did you notice how the water feels colder than the ice cube? The ice exposed to the salty water melts faster than other ice, so holes and channels form.

As Hrothgar promised, for Beowulfs courage, bravery, and honor, Hrothgar gave Beowulf a great amount of treasure for his trouble and kindness. Little did Beowulf and his warriors know though that Grendel had a mother, and she was coming back with revenge. Grendels mother comes at night when all is quiet and all the warriors are sleeping, and she takes away with her one of Hrothgars followers in the dead of night. She also takes with her, her son’s claw that Beowulf had claimed from Grendel as a trophy. Beowulf, being the hero of this whole story, goes to track down this fierce beast.
